The user exploration gives insights into the specific behaviours certain users have when using your app or website. It’s particularly useful for learning about the behavioural patterns of certain demographics.

1. Click “Explore” on the left.

2. Select “User explorer”.

How the user exploration works

The user exploration shows the users who are part of an existing segment or who are part of a temporary segment created by other Explorations approaches. You may drill down into the list to view more details on specific users, such as how and when they were obtained, summary stats for that user, and a timeline of their activity on your site or app. You can generate a segment from the user’s various behaviours to check whether other users conduct similar actions in the future.

3. Customise the user exploration

Device ID and Stream Name are mandatory and the only dimensions that can be used. However, you may adjust the metrics by adding or deleting them from the Tab Settings panel’s Values section.

3.1 Row adjustment

The user exploration shows your top 10 users by sessions by default. To change the amount of users displayed, go to Tab Settings:

  • The number of rows in the list is increased or decreased by selecting Show rows.
  • The first row of the list is determined by the start row.
  • Sort the list by selecting the title of a metric column.
  • Cell type allows you to display metrics in the list as simple text or with coloured bars or heat maps to enhance the visual display.
  • Use a section.
  • Drag an existing segment from the far left list to the settings panel’s segment target. The users identified by that segment can then be explored.

3.2 Filtering

You may limit the data presented in the user exploration list by applying a filter based on one or more dimensions or metrics. The AND logic is used to combine many conditions in your filter.

3.3 Time Frames

To modify the time frame and compare to data from a prior period, use the calendar choices in the Variables panel on the far left.

3.4 View individual user activity

Individual user activity may be viewed by selecting a record from the user exploration table.

This will display you complete information on how and when this user was recruited, as well as a timeline of activities on your site or app that were triggered by that user, organised by date.

Customise the activity list

Use the settings in the TIMELINE column on the left to:

  • Show only the events you’ve chosen
  • The timeline can be displayed as a compressed or enlarged list.
  • Sort the events in the timeline in the order they occurred.

Individual users are used to create a section.

By selecting one or more particular events in the timeline, you may construct a segment of all users with a certain set of events. Then click CREATE SEGMENT in the upper right corner. You may make any necessary changes to the resultant segment before saving it for future investigation or reporting.

Conclusion

User exploration in GA4 is a useful technique that can help you explore various segments of users to further categorize and understand unique user activity. This is especially important if you are looking to enhance the user experience on your website and app by customising it to suit the users’ needs.
