Google Analytics is a powerful tool that provides valuable information about your website performance and user behaviour on the website. As a free tool, it is also one of the most popular tools for digital marketing. Google Analytics offers you a wealth of data such as:
- Amount of website traffic
- Source of website traffic
- Individual page traffic
- User behaviour on website
- Conversion rate
And this is not even the complete list! Recently, Google has rolled out a new version of google analytics called Google Analytics 4 (GA4). While this is so, they are still advising users to also make use of the older version called Universal Analytics. Thus, this guide will show you how to install GA4, connect that to UA and install both on your website.
Step 1: Go to Google Analytics.
Here you will be prompted to sign in to your gmail account. (Make sure you have a gmail account before you start setting up Google Analytics.)
Step 2 (New User): Set Up An Account and Input your account name.
If you are new, you will immediately be taken to this page.
Account Name – best practices would be to input your business name. Take note that each account can have multiple properties assigned to it. Properties are the actual website that you want to track.

Step 2 (Existing User): Set Up An Account and Input your account name.
Click Admin → Click Create Account

Step 3: Property setup.

Step 7: Copy Measurement ID

Step 8: Connect Site Tags To Each Other (GA4 + UA)
Go All → Click Analytics Accounts → Click Properties (without GA4) → Click All Website Data

Click Admin → Click Tracking Info → Click Tracking Code → Click Connected Site Tags

Insert the Measurement ID (Step 7) and insert Nickname → Click Connect

Step 9: Connect Site Tags To Website
Go to Web stream details (Step 7) → Click “Add new on-page tag” → Copy the code
Add the code to your website at the Header Tag.

Step 10: Check if your tagging is working.
Download the “Tag Assistant Legacy (by Google)” extension on your chrome browser.

Click Enable and then refresh the page.

Ensure that the tag analysis comes up to a blue or a green. Any other other indicates that there are some issues with the tagging.

Congratulations! You are now able to analyse your website traffic and even conduct re-marketing campaigns on any Google platform.
